Around one hundred years ago, a bunch of American musicians discovered the joys of improvising and called it jazz. Over two thousand years ago, Indian classical musicians were busy laying down foundations for improvised music. If jazz is improvised music, Indian classical music is jazz! Now that we've discovered who really discovered jazz, it's time to take a good look at the state in India. The name of India's most popular live jazz venue located in Mumbai, tells the story loud and clear. It started as 'Jazz by the bay', changed to 'Not just jazz by the bay' and should now switch to 'Just not jazz by the bay'!
Granted, jazz has a niche audience and commercial music rules, but then a few years later, that same commercial music is ruled out while jazz blissfully evolves, embracing all other forms of music along the way. We now have rock-jazz, pop-jazz, funk-jazz, latin-jazz, hip-hop-jazz, indo-jazz... to cut a very long story short, there is a -jazz attached to every genre of music and there will be a -jazz attached ot every genre that comes along. That's how huge jazz is and it should now be spelt jaaaaaaaaaaz!
Jazz is the medium through which I express myself musically. Jazz allows me to be myself as opposed to pop that wants me to be Madonna. I'd rather be myself than strut onstage wearing conical jocks. In fact, not very long ago a leading music company in India released a male indi-pop star's album titled 'Mai bhi Madonna' (I'm Madonna too) with the man dressed in drag on the album cover. Jazz suddenly began to make profound sense to me. I chose to play bass as I felt it was the coolest sound of music. Rhythm, melody and harmony makes music and the bassplayer is the important link between the three. I may not be upfront or in the spotlight all the time like the singer in the band but I am certainly right behind the song all the way.
It's been a long, exciting journey into jazz for me. I made a lot of friends as a musician and a whole lot of enemies. I did meet a lot of people. If it wasn't for my music I would have been a lighthouse keeper on Andaman island or what's worse, I would have been a doctor, lawyer or engineer. Yes, music helped me get out of my shell and face the world with a song. I currently work on two resident contracts at the JW Marriott hotel with my indo-jazz fusion ensemble called 'The Brown Indian Band' for obvious reasons and at night at the Taj Lands End hotel with my band called 'The Bassman's Band' for some strange reason. I often take time off from these two gigs to perform at concerts and corporate events all over India and internationally. One of the highlights of my career so far, has been performing internationally on the world renowned Hennessy XO jazz tour.
My journey into jazz has been fun and my best is always yet to come. To give back to the music that gave me so much, I setup an organisation in Goa called 'Jazz Goa' that can be reviewed at www.jazzgoa.com After close to three decades of playing jazz with just about every jazz musician in the country, I would have loved to be called the Godfather of Indian jazz. The position has been filled I'm told, so I'll settle for Godson of Indian jazz!

Why do I play jazz when I could easily make millions if I learnt to sing pop through my nose? It's because jazz allows me to be myself as opposed to pop that wants me to be Madonna. Mumbai based jazz ensemble Soul Yatra is back after a very successful Asia-Pacific tour. Appointed as the Indian ambassadors of jazz by Hennessy XO, Soul Yatra has now been signed on as brand ambassadors and will perform several international events for Hennessy over the next two years. This is heartening news indeed for Indian jazz artistes who have been struggling for decades to find a voice in the international jazz arena. Jazz may have originated in America but today this form of improvised music is widely being accepted as the global sound of music. Jazz has always been alive and evolving drawing from worldwide cultures in it's journey towards global acceptance. Indian classical musicians in particular, have made a huge contribution to jazz since Indian classical music is all about improvisation-the keyword to jazz.
Soul Yatra's four country Asia-Pacific tour kicked off in Taipei, Taiwan on the 7th and 8th of October. The band performed at the very stylish nightclub of the Taipei Sheraton hotel to a surprisingly receptive audience. Testing overseas waters for the first time Soul Yatra stuck to traditional straight ahead jazz. The next two concerts on the 10th and 11th were in Seoul, South Korea where the band got the opportunity to perform at 'Once in a Blue Moon' jazz club that's listed among the world's best bars. The band's original indo-jazz fusion tunes made a big impression on the jazz connoisseurs in the audience. Next on the itinerary was Shanghai, China where the band literally rocked the boat on board a luxury yacht which was the venue on the 12th and 13th. The Shanghai crowd let their hair down to some swinging sounds of Latin jazz from Soul Yatra. The final leg of the tour wound up in Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Hilton's 'Zeta' bar on the 17th and 18th. Bollywood is big in Malaysia and what tickled the audience the most here, was the band's jazz interpretations of some popular Bollywood hits.

Colin D'Cruz got into music as a bassplayer with resident bands at some of the finest hotels in India. Ten years of six nights a week gigs, laid the foundation for a long and chequered career that took him through just about every genre of music, collaborating with all kinds of musicians, on assignments all over the world. An open mind, open ears and 'best is yet to come' philosophy keeps him in tune with evolving sounds of music and widens his musical horizons on a continuous basis. Even though he performs different forms of music at any given point of time, he always finds himself at home with jazz-the most open, alive and evolving form of music. Spontaneous improvisation is the key to great jazz and very often some of the most magical moments in jazz are recorded in concert as opposed to clinical studio sessions. After almost three decades of live performance, Colin has produced an album compiled of jazz standards recorded at some of his most memorable gigs over the years. The CD may not have the slick sound of a studio production but it certainly has what he calls 'the real deal' live and straight from the heart. Slip in this CD, turn down the lights, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy a live jazz concert wherever you are!
The CD is available online at www.jazzgoa.com

Colin D’Cruz began playing music professionally on resident band contracts with some of the finest hotels in India. Ten years of six nights a week gigs laid the foundation for a long and chequered career in music. He preferred working with different bands performing different styles of music and today he is one of the few bassplayers around, who has played just about every genre of music with just about every musician on the local circuit. He also performed internationally on resident contracts in the middle-east and Australia including a whole lot of worldwide concerts with local stars like Asha Bhosle, Sonu Nigam, Mehnaz, Shubha Mudgal, Apache Indian, Roop Kumar rathod, Sunali Rathod, and Remo Fernandes to name a few. His most recent international assignment was a four country Asia-Pacific tour for Hennessy with a jazz ensemble called ‘Soul Yatra’. His most significant project so far is an indo-jazz fusion ensemble he put together called ‘The Brown Indian Band’. This band has some accomplished Indian classical musicians getting together with local jazz virtuosos to produce a very funky sound of indo-jazz fusion. The band performs original material most of which is composed by Colin. His open mind and open ears towards evolving forms of rhythm, melody and harmony coupled with a ‘best is yet to come’ philosophy, has seen him through almost three eventful decades of live performance. The Brown Indian Band has been signed on by Raga to Rock records who will release the band's debut album internationally. Hear sample sounds of some of Colin's bands at http://www.hullocheck.com
